Senior Accountant Physicians Mutual is hiring a full-time Senior Accountant to prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements and all other management or mandated regulatory reports. In this role, you would examine general ledger trial balances and ensure all general ledger accounts are in balance based on reconciliations or subsidiary information and that reconciliations are prepared with great accuracy and uniformity. Key tasks include: Preparing or reviewing various work papers, accounting records and account reconciliations required for financial statements which are prepared by other staff members, Company personnel (Actuarial, Payroll, Annuities, etc.) or investment advisors and custodians. Preparing complex financial reports for rating agencies, corporate management, or other entities. Assisting Internal Audit by preparing schedules and work papers for external auditors and state financial examiners. Performing miscellaneous accounting duties including serving on project teams as a team member or functional representative.

ABOUT THE JOB

Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or equivalent experience required. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an insurance, financial institution, or public accounting position to include demonstrated experience and strong knowledge of management and financial reporting is required. Knowledge of the insurance industry as evidenced by the successful completion of LOMA I, LOMA II and LOMA VII courses is required. Coursework for professional designation (MBA, CPA, CMA, FLMI, etc.) desired. Thorough understanding of statutory accounting as applied to the insurance industry. Strong analytical abilities to determine proper accounting treatment of expenditures, receipts, calculate adjusting entries, structure file data, etc. Knowledge of all relevant state and federal regulatory guidelines to complete required escheat returns, financial work papers, etc. Strong knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Office (Excel and Microsoft Word), Database reporting software, General Ledger software and the ability to utilize personal computer for financial report preparation. Strong knowledge of Workday Financial Management Software experience is preferred.

  • Prepare daily and monthly cash reviews and reconciliations.
  • Enhance automated processes for reviewing cash activity.
  • Examine and research variances to ensure general ledger accounts are in balance.
  • Prepare or review various work papers, accounting records, and account reconciliations required for financial statements.
  • Prepare complex financial reports for rating agencies, corporate management, or other entities.
  • Assist Internal Audit by preparing schedules and work papers for external auditors and state financial examiners.
  • Perform miscellaneous accounting duties and serve on project teams.
