A Wolf Care and Maintenance Internship is a temporary, voluntary position in the Wolf Care, Conservation and Research Department. Wolf Care and Maintenance Interns are expected to be fairly new to the field and have interest in gaining knowledge and skills in one of three particular aspects of animal management: Animal Health, Wildlife Conservation, or Welfare Research. Work ranges from the physical tasks associated with managing wolves at the California Wolf Center to more analytical tasks of husbandry research, record keeping, and written and verbal communication. The Wolf Care and Maintenance Intern is expected to develop an appropriate level of knowledge in the directed area of study, as well as the natural history, captive management and psychological well-being of the wolves in his/her care. S/he is expected to implement California Wolf Center priorities as well as demonstrate the initiative and expertise to regularly find ways to make improvements. The Wolf Care and Maintenance Intern takes direction from the Wolf Care and Reintroduction Coordinator and the Facilities Coordinator regarding daily operations as appropriate. S/he must also be able to represent the Center in a variety of public settings which may include interactions with center guests.

Implement relevant protocols and procedures to promote efficient, respectful, and constructive work relationships, Serve as an example to colleagues and volunteers, Adhere to our policies, Be respectful of others, Take initiative to improve situations and maintain constructive working relationships, Use good communication skills, Demonstrate good listening skills, Communicate in a timely and constructive manner, Assist in the care and management of the wolves, Provide an ongoing program of enrichment including the provision of regular, schedules and varied forms of enrichment items, Daily observation of wolves’ feeding habits, health and injuries.Daily observation of social interaction, abnormal versus normal behavior and breeding activity. Maintain accurate and comprehensive written records of all observations, Communicate immediately all abnormal circumstances that require immediate attention. Assist with medical procedures and administer medications as needed, Assist in the transport and captures as necessary (NOT GUARANTEED). Provide clean, neat, safe and sanitary conditions in which the wolves may live, Maintain clean, neat, and safe service areas Become knowledgeable in Conservation Facility Maintenance and working safely in all facets including but not limited to: Weed Wacking, Raking, Construction, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Operating heavy machinery, and Habitat Maintenance
please keep in mind this is an unpaid internship and any income you will gain while interning with us will be solely what is paid to you by the skillbridge program. The salary listed is a salary range that you can expect from a job in this field with the experience you gain during your internship per the skillbridge position posting rules.
