Safety and Occupational Health Service at the Dayton VA Medical Center (DVAMC)
The Environmental Specialist is the facility Hazardous Materials Coordinator. They have a central role in planning and administering environmental programs. The Specialist manages programs that are designed to ensure compliance with federal, states, and local regulations governing air emissions, hazardous materials, non-hazardous and hazardous waste, environmental spills, water quality, and the storage of regulated substances, among other areas and to alleviate the adverse impacts of the human activities on the environment. The Hazardous Waste Coordinator also acts as the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) for hazardous waste removal contracts. As the COR, the Environmental Specialist will be responsible for monitoring the contractor’s progress in fulfilling the technical requirements specified in the contract. The Hazardous Waste Coordinator supports VA’s Green Environmental Management System (GEMS) implementation and applies specialized knowledge of one or more programs or functional areas of environmental protection work but does not require full professional competence in environmental engineering or science.SkillBridge can make a meaningful impact to the Safety Service and Dayton VAMC by allowing highly trained transitioning military members accustomed to learning critical and portable skillsets to gain hands-on experience that can be leveraged as the members transition to the next phase of reintegration into civilian life.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Planning and administering environmental programs
- Ensuring compliance with regulations governing air emissions, hazardous materials, waste, environmental spills, water quality, and storage of regulated substances
- Acting as the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) for hazardous waste removal contracts
