We use the time prior to their finite internship dates to complete our required HR processes that also include a 3 to 5 month (on average) full CBP Background Investigation (BI) that MUST be completed prior to internship start dates.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe intern remains abreast of the constantly changing legislation and current events and their potential impact to CBP operations and the impact to the resilience, health, and well-being of CBP employees and their families. Leverages knowledge of CBP operations to manage, modify, or implement survivor advocacy programs. Shares operational knowledge and provides context and information regarding survivor advocacy programs with surviving family members and employees affected by the death of a CBP employee.The intern supports survivors and provides immediate and long-term support, confirms with the Retirement and Benefits Advisory Services Branch (RABAS), and, as appropriate, supports the survivors through the benefits application processes. The incumbent serves as an advocate and support mechanism for surviving family members of deceased CBP employees, especially in cases of line of duty deaths (LODD) and suicides. The intern will provide for long-term support of surviving family members, including ongoing awareness of resources, crisis intervention, assistance through cessation or cancellation of benefits, and unresolved issues which often surface months or years after the death of a CBP employee. The intern will coordinate with National and local chaplaincy, Peer Support, Honor Guard, local management, funeral homes, churches, cemeteries, etc. on behalf of the surviving family, as necessary, to help facilitate service requests. The incumbent will attend services for deceased CBP employees and ensure open communication between the surviving family members and CBP leadership.The intern serves as a long-term liaison with the survivors to ensure that close contact is maintained between CBP and the survivors, and their needs are met for as long as they feel the need for support. The intern must be aware of all facts connected to a LODD to be able to convey to the survivors the situation and context in which the LODD occurred which requires sensitivity and discretion for these delicate situations. The incumbent will serve as a resource to surviving family members and to CBP professionals who are affected by the short and long-term impacts caused by the death of CBP employees. The intern will work with RABAS to assist in gathering details, points of contact, documentation, etc., to assist with and ensure benefits are processed in the most expeditious manner possible. Additional duties include working with the RABAS team to help build rapport between survivors and RABAS. The intern may also deploy with RABAS to meet surviving family members in person.
