The SkillBridge Intern will perform technical work in support of professional or technical employees engaged in hydrologic data collection activities. While on the 180-day internship, the participant will receive on the job training and gain a practical knowledge of the methods, procedure, and instrumentation used in hydrologic studies. Hydrologic Technicians gather information on the quantity, quality, availability, movement and distribution of ground water and surface water. They also evaluate water samples and data and carry out related duties that support the professional work in Hydrology.

ABOUT THE JOB

The California Water Science Center, Santa Maria Field Office has a vacant Hydrologic Technician position available and looking to fill the position using the SkillBridge Program. Ideal candidates need minimal construction and computer experience and enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions. Performs measurements of water-level, stage, and discharge. Plots discharge measurements and estimates short periods of missing records. Verifies the accuracy of data. Prepares samples for lab analyses. Performs installation, maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting of sensing, recording, and communications equipment and instrumentation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform technical work in support of professional or technical employees engaged in hydrologic data collection activities.
  • Perform measurements of water-level, stage, and discharge.
  • Plot discharge measurements and estimate short periods of missing records.
  • Verify the accuracy of data.
  • Prepare samples for lab analyses.
  • Perform installation, maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting of sensing, recording, and communications equipment and instrumentation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimal construction and computer experience.
  • Ability to enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Considerable dexterity, agility, and strenuous physical exertion required.
  • Ability to work in treacherous areas such as slippery or icy riverbanks, steep rocky terrain, cableways, or fast-moving water.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or more.
  • Ability to crouch or crawl in restricted areas.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY

The work requires considerable dexterity, agility, and strenuous physical exertion while in the field, such as climbing and/or working from tall ladders and scaffolding; work in areas where footing is treacherous such as slippery or icy riverbanks, steep rocky terrain, cableways, or fast-moving water; lifting heavy objects weighing 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or more or crouching or crawling in restricted areas.

The USGS California Water Science Center, Santa Maria Field Office will be relocating to San Luis Obispo, CA and will be collocated on the Cal Poly campus. The move will begin starting in December 2024 (approximate and date subject to change).
