This position is a 90-day rotational SkillBridge internship designed to provide a transitioning servicemember with hands-on experience in public library operations. The participant will rotate through multiple divisions of the library, including Circulation & Branch Services, Adult Services, Youth Services, Outreach, and Technical Services, to gain broad exposure to frontline public service, programming support, outreach activities, and behind-the-scenes library functions. Under the guidance of experienced library staff, the participant will observe, shadow, and assist with duties comparable to library assistant and specialist roles.
Responsibilities may include providing customer service to patrons, assisting with circulation and materials handling, supporting events and programs, participating in outreach activities, assisting with collection maintenance, and learning basic cataloging and technical services workflows. The role emphasizes skill development, cross-functional learning, and professional acclimation to a civilian public service environment, rather than independent or librarian-level work. The residency is structured to build transferable skills in customer service, communication, teamwork, time management, community engagement, and operational support, while providing meaningful exposure to a wide range of public library careers.
