In support of these goals, National Wildlife Refuges in Alaska are seeking to fill SkillBridge opportunities in the field of maintenance. Duties vary depending on work site but may include: • General maintenance and repair: heating systems, vehicles, trails, roads and buildings. Examples of buildings on sites include visitor centers, public use cabins, staff housing, and office buildings. • Groundskeeping (around visitor center, offices, or campgrounds for example) • Painting• ConstructionDesired Skills: Beneficial, but not required to have CDL and experience with ATVs, heavy equipment (excavators, road graders), boat trailering, boating, construction, auto mechanics, snow removal, troubleshooting heating systems, or other related maintenance skills.Required:• Valid Driver’s license • Ability to:o undergo and pass a background check if requiredo work outdoors in inclement weathero walk on uneven, slippery terrain• Interest in assisting with or leading maintenance projects in support of National Wildlife Refuges, in some cases in remote, rural settings. • FWS required training will be provided by the FWS and varies depending on site, but may include First aid/CPR, Aviation training/water ditching, Motorboat Operator Certification Course, Information Management and Technology, and others. Locations: All locations provide beautiful and unique landscapes. Please note that some are in remote locations in or near communities accessible by plane or boat only (not on the road system). Other Eligibility Factors: Standing for extended periods. Hiking or walking on uneven terrain, depending on position. Depending on location, may include working in the backcountry, flying in small planes (Super Cubs and 185s), packrafting, bear awareness, and able to deal with inclement weather. Required successful completion of training on bear awareness and safety and water ditching (depending on position).
