J2B Industrial’s Controls & Automation Engineer program is a 12-week, 480-hour on-the-job training program in Jacksonville, FL. It prepares transitioning service members to design, build, program, test and commission control systems for the packaged skids J2B builds for data center and power generation customers.Participants start with electrical safety, J2B’s quality system, and the codes and standards behind the work (NEC, NFPA 70E/79 and UL 508A). They then learn to read electrical and instrumentation drawings and to understand how skid process equipment works. From there, they build hands-on skills:Designing and building UL 508A control panelsCalibrating instruments and setting up VFDsProgramming PLCs and HMIsConfiguring industrial networks with basic cybersecurityThe program ends with I/O checkout, FAT/SAT testing and commissioning to customer requirements, followed by a capstone project in which participants take a customer specification all the way through to a working control design and complete turnover documentation.
J2B Industrial designs, builds, tests and delivers commissioning-ready utility skids, process systems, prefabricated piping and modular infrastructure for data center, power generation, energy and industrial customers. The Controls & Automation Engineer takes J2B skid control systems from customer specification through design, build, programming, testing and turnover. The role covers UL 508A panel design, instrumentation, VFDs, PLC and HMI programming, industrial networks, FAT/SAT testing and commissioning, all under NFPA 70E safe work practices.Key responsibilities• Turn customer specifications into working control designs for J2B skids• Design, specify and build UL 508A control panels; wire, terminate and verify 24 VDC control and 120/480 VAC power circuits• Select, install and calibrate pressure, temperature, flow and level instruments (4–20 mA, HART)• Configure and verify motor starters and variable frequency drives• Write, test and document PLC logic in ladder, function block and structured text (IEC 61131-3)• Build HMI screens, alarms and trends following ISA-18.2 alarm management practices• Configure and troubleshoot EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, PROFINET and BACnet networks; apply ISA/IEC 62443 cybersecurity basics• Perform I/O checkout, loop checks and point-to-point verification• Write and run FAT and SAT procedures that meet data center and power generation requirements (redundancy, BMS/EPMS integration, commissioning levels 1–5)• Troubleshoot faults using meters, loop calibrators, PLC diagnostics and network tools• Report test results and technical issues to project managers and customers, and prepare complete turnover documentationRequired qualifications• Bachelor's degree or higher in electrical, mechanical, controls or related engineering from an accredited institution• Working knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 70E, NFPA 79 and UL 508A• Understanding of ISA-5.1 symbols, P&IDs, loop diagrams and control narratives• Ability to read and mark up electrical schematics and panel layouts• Knowledge of PLC architecture and IEC 61131-3 programming languages• Commitment to safe work under lockout/tagout and energized-work controls• Clear communicator with project managers and customers• Able to work hands-on in J2B's shop and at customer sitesPreferred qualifications• Experience with Rockwell Studio 5000 / FactoryTalk or Siemens TIA Portal• Experience with industrial networks: EtherNet/IP, Modbus, PROFINET and BACnet• Familiarity with ISA-18.2 alarm management and ISA/IEC 62443 control-system cybersecurity• Experience with FAT/SAT testing and commissioning for data center or power generation projects• Knowledge of BMS/EPMS integration and commissioning levels 1–5• Experience with process equipment: pumps, chillers, heat exchangers, valves and piping systems• Military background in electrical, electronics, instrumentation or engineering fieldsWorking conditions and benefits• Shop, test bay and customer site environment with exposure to energized equipment, noise and moving machinery; PPE provided• Must follow NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout and J2B safety requirements• Benefits: health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid time off and certification supportSkillBridge pathwayTransitioning service members can prepare for this role through J2B's 12-week, 480-hour DoD SkillBridge program, delivered on the job at J2B.
