The Technical Response Unit (TRU) is part of the National Response Coordination Section (NRCS) in the Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG) Division of the FBI. The mission of the TRU is to provide temporary secure voice, video, and data communications capabilities to forward-deployed FBI personnel outside of traditional FBI space at critical incidents or crisis response sites throughout the world. To meet this need, TRU utilizes a nation-wide network of Mobile Command Post Vehicles (MCPV) and portable, scalable IT Fly Away communications kits.TRU serves as CIRG’s telecommunications and networked systems authority, managing design, development and deployment of complex local and wide-area data communications, security and access control measures, and other systems.

ABOUT THE JOB

Serves as an Electronics Technician (ET) at a quasi-professional level of responsibility in the engineering, planning, training, procurement, test, evaluation, installation, and maintenance of the Bureau's complex communications/network and intrusion detection systems and associated wide/narrow band wireless communication equipment. Functions in various areas of specialization and functional areas, including but not limited to electronics surveillance, data network, emerging forensic video, image, audio, wireless, networking, electronic security, microwave etc., and provides expertise concerning a myriad of assignments from routine to unique and complex. Depending upon the functional area, works on data and voice encryption devices, wireless networking, implementing connectivity of equipment and designing of immediate secure tactical communications platforms. Technically engineers the most complex, frequently one-of-a-kind, electronic systems and subsystems, multiplexers, power supplies, repeaters, and digital control equipment, etc. Modifies and designs interface electronics to ensure interconnect ability and interoperability. Interprets and evaluates national standards and policies relating to the technical design of complex electronic equipment, communications systems and techniques and operates within those perimeters. Evaluates new and existing secure communication systems to establish a command center at a crisis site and promptly provides immediate connectivity to FBIHQ, appropriate field offices, and/or other law enforcement and government agencies. Conducts surveys and design strategies for the installation of communications, electronics and ELSUR equipment by adapting complex equipment/systems in unusual and precarious locations requiring innovative and unique installation configuration. Identifies individual requirements and modifications after site inspection and evaluation of program characteristics. Resolves unforeseen issues and controversial problems to facilitate the required operations under stringent time constraints. Evaluates commercial off-the-shelf communication systems necessary to satisfy the needs of multiple users. Keeps abreast of new and changing technologies to identify state-of-the-art equipment. Assists in the selection and application of appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, provides advice on work methods, practices, and procedures, and assists in identifying possible technical solutions. Participates actively in planning, organizing, and managing preventive and corrective maintenance programs. Routinely inspects and tests equipment/systems to ensure that technical integrity is maintained and if necessary, proposes appropriate corrective action. Identifies budgetary and resource requirements through preparation of specifications for development, procurement, delivery, installation and/or deployment of unique and innovative systems and provides cost estimates for the same. Prepares and conducts training in technical fields on complex, one-of-a-kind, electronic systems and subsystems, multiplexers, power supplies, repeaters, and digital control equipment, forensic audio, and video operations etc. Modifies and designs interface electronics to ensure interconnectability and interoperability. Interprets and evaluates national standards and policies relating to the technical design of complex electronic equipment, communications systems and techniques and operates within those perimeters. Continuously reviews pertinent technical manuals to remain current with technology. Participates in interagency conferences to discuss and resolve issues of mutual interest.

RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a current Top Secret clearance.
  • Must meet the FBI's minimum eligibility requirements.
  • Must be a US Citizen and have no criminal record.
  • Must adhere to the FBI drug policy.
