Fiberglass Repair TechnicianAs part of the talented Fiberglass team, you will specialize in the repair, maintenance, and construction of fiberglass structures on boats and other marine vessels. Examine boats and other marine vessels to identify damage or wear in fiberglass components. This includes assessing cracks, blisters, and structural weaknesses. Using various techniques to repair or restore damaged fiberglass, including sanding, patching, and applying resin. This may involve filling cracks, re-molding sections, and smoothing surfaces. Overall, a Marine Fiberglass Technician combines technical skills with craftsmanship to ensure the durability and aesthetic quality of fiberglass components in the marine industry.

ABOUT THE JOB

Fiberglass Repair TechnicianThe essential functions of a Fiberglass Technician are to perform repairs on damaged fiberglass by removing compromised areas, applying new layers of fiberglass, and using resins and other materials to restore structural integrity. Building new fiberglass parts or components as needed, which may involve creating molds, layering fiberglass, and applying gel coats or other finishes. This can also include customs for modifications or upgrades.Required Qualifications: • Operating specialized equipment (such as power sanders or rollers) and moving materials around requires both upper body strength and coordination. Some of these tools may cause strain when used continuously over long periods.• Layer fiberglass mats or cloths with resin onto molds or surfaces, ensuring even coverage and bonding. While shape and mold fiberglass components to the correct dimensions, sometimes using specialized tools like rollers and brushes.• Tasks like cutting fiberglass cloth, applying resin, and sanding down cured pieces can involve repetitive motion. Workers may be required to make many repeated movements with their hands, arms, or body, leading to potential strain if not managed properly.• Conduct thorough inspections of fiberglass structures on boats and marine vessels to detect and evaluate damage. Identify issues such as cracks, blisters, delamination, and structural weaknesses.• Prepare surfaces for fiberglass application by cleaning, sanding, and priming. Apply finishing touches such as gel coat or paint to ensure a smooth, durable, and aesthetically pleasing surface.• Follow all safety protocols and industry standards when handling materials like resins, solvents, and fiberglass. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure that all procedures meet regulatory requirements. Follow all safety procedures, including wearing protective gear (respirators, gloves, goggles) and ensuring a well-ventilated workspace.• Carry out regular maintenance tasks to prevent future damage and ensure the longevity of fiberglass components. This includes inspecting for signs of wear and proactively addressing potential issues.• Maintain and clean tools, equipment, and workspaces to ensure safety and efficient operation.• Address any unexpected challenges or issues that arise during repairs or fabrication. Use problem-solving skills to devise effective solutions and adapt techniques as necessary.Preferred Qualifications: • Completion of a specialized vocational training program or certification related to marine repair, fiberglass technology, or composites can be advantageous.• Certifications from relevant marine or fiberglass industry organizations can enhance qualifications. Examples include certifications from the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) or similar organizations.• Previous experience working with fiberglass in a marine or related industry is highly preferred. Experience in repairing and fabricating fiberglass components on boats or other marine vessels is particularly valuable.• Understanding of marine systems and structures, including hulls, decks, and internal components.
