The General Construction Specialist SkillBridge program prepares transitioning service members for a career in commercial construction as a skilled tradesperson and laborer. Participants will be embedded in RCG’s field operations across active job sites, developing broad hands-on skills across multiple construction trades. Training emphasizes physical participation in construction activities under the direct supervision of an experienced RCG Superintendent, providing a strong foundation for advancement to foreman and superintendent roles.
The General Construction Specialist performs skilled and semi-skilled construction labor across a broad range of commercial construction activities under the direction of an RCG Superintendent. This is a field-based, hands-on role that serves as the foundation of RCG’s self-perform workforce. The General Construction Specialist works across multiple trades — carpentry, drywall, flooring, concrete, MEP support, and site work — contributing directly to the physical progress of RCG’s projects. For the right individual with the work ethic and drive to grow, this position is the starting point of a career path that leads to Foreman, Superintendent, and beyond.Key ResponsibilitiesGeneral Construction Labor• Perform rough carpentry including wood and light gauge metal stud framing, blocking, and backing installation• Install gypsum board, complete drywall taping and finishing, and install fire-rated and sound-rated assemblies• Install resilient flooring systems (LVT, VCT, sheet vinyl), carpet tile, acoustical ceiling tile (ACT), and suspended grid systems• Install prefabricated casework, countertops, door frames, and hardware per project specifications and hardware schedules• Assist with concrete forming, placement, finishing, and curing for flatwork and foundation elementsSite Support & Material Handling• Safely receive, handle, stage, and inventory construction materials per Superintendent direction• Maintain organized lay-down areas and ensure materials are properly protected and labeled• Execute erosion control installation, site cleanup, waste sorting, and dumpster management• Assist with exterior work including site grading support, utility installation assistance, and exterior concrete• Support MEP subcontractors with rough-in assistance including sleeve installation, blocking, and trench supportSafety & ICRA Compliance• Comply with all OSHA safety requirements and RCG site safety protocols at all times• Properly select, use, inspect, and maintain all required personal protective equipment (PPE)• Participate in daily safety briefings, weekly toolbox talks, and job hazard analysis (JHA) reviews• Install, maintain, and inspect ICRA containment barriers per Class I–IV permit requirements in occupied healthcare facilities• Follow all infection prevention protocols including negative air procedures, sticky mat use, and decontamination on exitQuality & Documentation• Perform in-process quality checks using levels, squares, and gauges to verify work meets specification requirements• Identify and immediately report non-conformances or deficiencies to the assigned Superintendent• Execute punch list items including final touch-up painting, caulking, sealing, and pre-occupancy cleaning• Document field activities and observations using Procore mobile application as directed by SuperintendentPreferred Qualifications• High school diploma or GED• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and pneumatic equipment• Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the role: lifting up to 50 lbs, prolonged standing, kneeling, climbing, and working in variable weather conditions• Reliable transportation to report to assigned project sites throughout the Carolinas• Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and commitment to team-first performance• OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Certification (RCG will provide OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 training for qualified candidates)• 1+ years of commercial construction experience in carpentry, drywall, flooring, concrete, or related trade• Experience working in healthcare construction or occupied facility renovation environments• Familiarity with Procore or other field documentation tools• Military service or experience in a disciplined, team-oriented work environmentCore Competencies• Physical Stamina & Work Endurance • Following Direction & Taking Initiative• Tool Safety & Equipment Operation • Dependability & Punctuality• Attention to Detail & Quality • ICRA / Healthcare Site Awareness• Team Collaboration • Adaptability Across Trade Types• Safety Awareness & Compliance • Pride in CraftmanshipWork Environment & Physical RequirementsThis position requires daily presence on active commercial construction job sites in all weather conditions. The role is physically demanding and involves prolonged standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, and lifting materials up to 50 lbs. Workers are exposed to construction noise, dust, and variable weather conditions. All applicable PPE must be worn at all times. Assignment location varies by project; local and regional travel throughout North Carolina and the Carolinas is required. Healthcare project assignments require strict adherence to ICRA infection control protocols.
