Assistants will work directly underneath a master craftsman in the design and build process of heirloom-quality pieces, gaining exposure to fine woodworking techniques, precision craftsmanship, and the full lifecycle of custom furniture—from concept and material selection to fabrication and finish. The role emphasizes attention to detail, problem-solving, self-discipline, and pride in workmanship. Assistants will develop practical shop skills while also learning how a small, design-driven custom furniture business operates, including client communication, workflow planning, and quality control.
Will assist in the day-to-day operations of a custom furniture workshop specializing in bespoke, high-end, one-of-a-kind pieces. Duties include supporting the fabrication of fine furniture through material preparation, joinery, assembly, sanding, and finishing under the guidance of a master furniture maker. Assistants will operate hand tools and stationary machinery safely and accurately, maintain shop organization, and uphold high standards of craftsmanship and quality control. Additional responsibilities include assisting with project planning, documenting build processes, preparing components for client review, and supporting final delivery and installation when applicable. Assistants may observe and participate in client consultations, learn professional communication practices, and assist with revisions based on client feedback. Exposure to small business operations—such as material sourcing, pricing considerations, scheduling, and workflow management—is an integral part of the role.
