The Resident in Counseling is a pre-licensed clinician participating in a structured residency program designed to support the development of ethical, competent, and confident mental health professionals. Under the direct supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), the resident provides outpatient counseling services while engaging in ongoing clinical training, mentorship, and professional development.This role is part of the Renewing Minds Clinical Pathways Program to improve overall wellness and quality of life for individuals, couples, and families.
Primary duties and areas of responsibility as defined below:Core Competencies• Clinical judgment and ethical decision-making • Empathy, warmth, and strong interpersonal skills • Organization, documentation, and time management • Openness to supervision, feedback, and continuous learning Clinical Services• Provide individual, couples, family, and group counseling services in an outpatient setting • Deliver services in person (office-based) with telehealth integration as appropriate • Conduct biopsychosocial assessments and develop individualized treatment plans • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation • Monitor client progress and adjust interventions as clinically indicated Professional Development & Training• Participate in individual and group clinical supervision in accordance with Virginia Board requirements • Engage in structured training through the Clinical Pathways Program • Demonstrate ongoing development of trauma-informed treatment • Integrate feedback from supervisors into clinical practice Ethical & Professional Practice• Adhere to all ethical guidelines as outlined by the American Counseling Association and Virginia licensing board • Maintain confidentiality and uphold HIPAA standards • Demonstrate professionalism in all clients, team, and community interactions Collaboration & Team Engagement• Participate in case consultation and interdisciplinary collaboration • Communicate effectively with supervisors, administrative staff, and referral partners • Contribute to a supportive and mission-driven clinical environment QualificationsRequired• Master’s degree in counseling with 600-hr clinical internship from a CACREP accredited university.• Registered or eligible to register as a Resident in Counseling with the Virginia Board of Counseling. • Strong foundational clinical skills and willingness to learn • Commitment to ethical practice and professional growth Preferred• Experience working with various populations • Interest in trauma, marriage, grief, and life transitions counseling• Familiarity with evidence-based modalities (CBT, person-centered, etc.) Career OpportunitiesEligible participants who successfully complete the 26-week training program are eligible for employment as Resident in Counseling with Renewing Minds Inc.
