ABOUT THE JOB
James City County offers transitioning service members placement opportunities across multiple County departments — including Administration, Community Development, Financial & Management Services, General Services (e.g. Stormwater, Solid Waste, Capital Projects), Human Resources, Information Resources Management, Parks & Recreation, and Public Safety. Depending on your interests, skills, and experience, you’ll be placed in a department to support real-world projects such as project coordination, customer service, capital improvement assistance, regulatory compliance tracking, community outreach, or technical support. These flexible placements are structured to build professional experience within local government, highlight transferable skills, and help you identify long-term career paths in a mission-driven public sector environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS
- Eligible participants must be active-duty service members
- Meet DoD SkillBridge criteria

- Be in good standing with current command
- Possess the flexibility to adapt to a civilian work environment
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY
Eligible participants must be active-duty service members who meet DoD SkillBridge criteria, including command approval and being within 180 days of separation. Final placement is contingent on successful completion of any department-specific onboarding requirements (e.g., background checks, certifications, or security clearances, as applicable). Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in public service, be in good standing with their current command, and possess the flexibility to adapt to a civilian work environment.
