About the Internship:This internship is a hands on field leadership/onsite execution leadership experience. It will continue to build and develop valuable skills learned in the military and help transfer them into technical industries:Advanced Field Leadership & Cross-Functional Execution Under PressureMore specifically, this internship would rapidly develop someone in:1. Leading Without Formal Authority (the single biggest skill)• Directing electricians, install techs, and other third-party contractors.• Influencing multi-vendor, multi-discipline teams through persuasion, technical credibility, clear communication, and relationship-building rather than formal power.• This is an extremely rare and high-value skill that separates good technical people from future leaders and project directors.2. Real-time Problem Solving & Decision-Making in Ambiguous, High-Stakes Environments• Making fast decisions when schedules slip, issues pop up, or conditions change on a live construction/installation site.• Balancing safety, quality, cost, and schedule in real time.• Learning to own the consequences of those decisions (including cost and schedule impact of changes/rework).3. On-Site Technical Execution & System-Level Thinking• Hands-on validation of automation installations (adapter cells, controls, etc.).• Understanding how complex electro-mechanical systems come together in the field.• Developing a strong sense for what "commissioning-ready" actually looks like and how to minimize costly rework.4. Risk Management & Schedule Ownership• Identifying installation-driven risks early.• Driving recovery plans when things go sideways.• Managing tradeoffs between cost, quality, and speed.5. Contractor & Team Performance Management• Holding external contractors accountable for productivity and quality without being their direct boss.• Driving accountability through influence, clear expectations, and escalation when needed.Bonus long-term skills it builds:• Lessons-learned discipline — turning every site into institutional knowledge for the next one.• Cross-functional collaboration — working daily with Project Management, Engineering, Safety, and Commissioning.Who would benefit most from this role?Someone transitioning from the military who wants to move into project leadership, field operations, or installation management. After 1–2 years doing this successfully, they would be well-positioned for roles like Site Installation Manager, Commissioning Manager, or broader Project/Program Manager positions in automation, robotics, manufacturing, or construction. In short: This job teaches you how to get complex technical things built correctly, safely, and on time when you don't control most of the people doing the work — one of the hardest and most respected skills in industry.
Who we are With its AI-powered robotic technology platform, Symbotic is changing the way consumer goods move through the supply chain. Intelligent software orchestrates advanced robots in a high-density, end-to-end system — reinventing warehouse automation for increased efficiency, speed, and flexibility. What we need We are seeking a Site Installation Lead to serve as a field leader within our Site Installations organization. This role is responsible for owning the safe, high-quality, on-schedule delivery of Symbotic’s automation installation scope on live customer sites, from mobilization through commissioning readiness. This is not a project coordination role — it is a field leadership role that requires hands-on execution, decision-making under pressure, and the ability to lead multi-discipline, multi-vendor teams in fast-paced construction and startup environments. What we do The Site Installation team is responsible for delivering Symbotic’s automation systems on customer sites — turning engineered designs into fully installed, commissioning-ready operations. The organization oversees the full on-site installation lifecycle, including automation equipment, adapter cells, electrical and controls integration, and coordination with structural, racking, and construction partners. Working in close partnership with Project Management, Engineering, Safety, and Commissioning, the Site Installation team ensures that systems are installed safely, at high quality, on schedule, and within budget, setting each site up for a successful startup and long-term performance. What you’ll do Lead the on-site execution of automation, controls, and adapter-cell installation from mobilization through commissioning readiness. Drive safe, high-quality, on-schedule installation across electricians, controls technicians, commissioning resources, and third-party contractors. Own cell-level readiness for handoff to commissioning with minimal rework and zero safety incidents. Serve as the field authority for Symbotic’s automation installation scope on site. Direct and influence multi-vendor, multi-discipline teams without formal reporting lines. Make real-time decisions when conditions change, issues arise, or schedules are at risk. Identify, escalate, and resolve installation-driven risks impacting schedule, quality, and cost. Own the cost and schedule impact of field changes, rework, and resource tradeoffs within the automation scope. Drive contractor performance, productivity, and accountability. Validate system installation through hands-on field verification, checklists, and performance testing. Ensure each adapter cell and automation area is commissioning-ready with defects resolved and documentation complete. Capture lessons learned and apply them to future sites. Partner closely with the Site Installation Manager, Project Management, Engineering, Safety, and Commissioning to ensure overall site success. Lead automation-specific kickoff meetings, progress reviews, and recovery plans. What you’ll need Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline or related field required.
