Four Paws at Fulshear, a privately owned small-animal general practice in Fulshear, Texas, offers a hands-on 24-week training program for transitioning service members pursuing a civilian career in veterinary medicine — from entry-level veterinary assistant / clinical support roles to veterinary school.Training offered: 24 weeks (960 hours) of structured, full-time, in-person, supervised clinical training under the direct supervision of Meghan Denney, DVM (Texas veterinary license #13403), Practice Owner and senior mentor, alongside licensed veterinary technicians and experienced veterinary assistants. Six phases: veterinary foundations and hospital operations; outpatient medicine and client communication; laboratory medicine and diagnostic imaging; treatment, surgery, and sterile technique; anesthesia, dentistry, and advanced patient care; and clinical reasoning, professional development, and veterinary school preparation. Participants develop hands-on skills — animal handling, patient care, vital signs, microscopy and diagnostic sampling, lab testing, preventive medicine, surgical preparation, anesthesia support, dentistry, and client communication — plus exposure to a DVM's diagnostic reasoning, treatment planning, medical ethics, and client education. Participants interested in veterinary school receive additional mentorship on career pathways, academic preparation, professional expectations, and the application process. Progress is tracked with weekly mentor check-ins, competency checklists, formal reviews at weeks 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20, and a final competency evaluation with a clinical case presentation in week 24. The participant is a trainee, not an employee: no compensation, gifts, or training costs may be imposed on the service member (DoD pays salary and benefits throughout).Schedule: Trainee hours Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (40 hrs/week). Clinic hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00 AM–6:00 PM; Wednesday 8:00 AM–1:00 PM — on Wednesdays, the trainee's afternoon hours are one-on-one tutoring/mentorship with Dr. Denney. Total hours: 960 (40 hrs/week × 24 weeks). Location: 8418 Syms Street, Fulshear, TX (in person only). Length: 24 weeks (~6 months, 91–120 day CMS bracket). How to apply: Follow the SkillBridge application process and have your command reach out through the contact listed on this announcement.
Employment pathway: Four Paws at Fulshear intends to hire successful completers directly into veterinary assistant/support roles. On completion, participants have foundational knowledge and practical experience appropriate for entry-level veterinary assistant or veterinary clinical support employment, plus structured exposure to the veterinary profession and the path to a DVM. (The program does not confer veterinary technician licensure, veterinary certification, or authorization to independently perform restricted medical procedures.)
Who may apply: Transitioning service members eligible for DoD SkillBridge within 180 days of separation, with command approval. Training plan is designed for one participant per cohort; the clinic will host at least one SkillBridge participant per year.
