This specialized SkillBridge fellowship is designed for transitioning service members with existing sea service who are seeking a dedicated, rigorous pathway into professional maritime operations, specifically traditional sail training. Operated by an approved maritime training school, this program bridges the gap between military service and the unique demands of the commercial tall ship fleet and shoreside maritime education.
The training program includes light administrative duties for the organization, but is otherwise a dedicated/focused program to complete USCG-approved merchant mariner training. The timeframe includes enough time to complete 100T master, 200T upgrade, Sail/Tow, Able Seafarer, as well as merchant mariner administration. The training is mostly conducted online, however Skill Bridge requires at least one day per week in-person in Ormond Beach FL. This training program does not result in a dedicated job position, but does include unlimited mentoring and introductions to POC's who are hiring for merchant mariner deck officers. License administration typically takes 3 months after the completion of training before the credential is issued.
The minimum cumulative sea service to obtain a license is 360 days. 720 days is preferred. At least 90 of these days should have occurred within the past 7 years.
