Facilities Maintenance - This position is located on the Umpqua National Forest where the incumbent has primary responsibilities for potable water and wastewater maintenance, recreation maintenance, administrative facilities maintenance, and field camp maintenance and management.
ABOUT THE JOB
MAJOR DUTIES OF FACILITIES MAINTENANCEMaintains recreation sites, areas, and water systems in accordance with maintenance and operating plans. Summarizes a report for work completed and condition of sites. Performs equipment operation, using gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as flat bed, weed eaters, Lawn mowers, sewer line jetter, vac truck and chainsaws. Operates the water systems at a campground, including certification and regular water quality testing for compliance with state standards.Maintains housing facilities, warehouse, workshop, and grounds. Inspects heating systems in government facilities. Troubleshoots and performs irregular emergency fixes on heating and plumbing fixtures. Repairs underground water and sewer pipes, flushes out manholes, cuts, threads and assembles piping for water, gas, and fuel oil. Performs plumbing work which involves repair to existing buildings used by the public, typically consisting of replacing worn or broken fixtures, unclogging drains, re-sweating copper water pipes, replacing sections of plastic pipe, toilet flush valves, shower water valves, floor toilet seals, and similar repairs such as those requiring digging up underground water and sewer lines and reburying. Performs seasonal opening and closing of waterborne fixtures and facilities to include the opening and closing of main valves, draining and recharging of water lines. Prepares paint and applies using brushes, rollers and high-pressure waterless paint sprayers. Cleans and otherwise prepares surfaces for painting using hand tools and pressure washers. Performs irregular repairs on pad connections such as sewer and water and assists with the maintenance conditions of the Forest Service roads and driveways. Maintains water systems at field camps including regular water quality testing for compliance with state standards. Troubleshoots with schematics, sketches, and drawings. Reads and interprets blueprints. Receives a variety of materials, supplies, or equipment coming into the receiving area from internal or commercial sources. Loads and unloads supplies and equipment.Keeps records of all warehouse transactions, including incoming and outgoing shipments, and stock on hand. Reviews manufacturer and technical manuals to operate and maintain equipment and apply basic knowledge for repairing or ordering repairs for equipment problems. Mixes concrete and places and spreads it in forms.Finishes concrete with float and trowel, mixes mortar and patches or makes minor repairs to existing masonry structures. Builds or repairs steps, porches, hand railings; installs and repairs gutters and downspouts; does light framing and/or sheet-rocking; installs siding; replaces wall coverings around shower stalls; hangs doors and trim; replaces windows, counters, tables, bookcases, storage cabinets, toolboxes, and similar items as needed. Performs light welding and cutting for various repairs. Provides support to the unit regarding fleet maintenance and winterizing. Performs manual labor and grounds maintenance duties, such as pulling weeds, mowing, watering grass, and shoveling snow. Performs digging work related to such tasks as laying of plumbing systems and building sidewalks. Fills and levels holes in damaged roads and sidewalks. Mixes and places concrete and asphalt. Cuts trees using chainsaws and axes. Operates vehicles weighing up to 17,000 pounds. Transports personnel, materials, and equipment on Federal, State and County roads at highway speeds and on City streets with lower speed limits. Travels over uneven terrain, on unimproved and improved roads with narrow passages. Completes trip tickets and preventive maintenance records. Performs prescribed minor vehicle preventive maintenance. Loads/unloads vehicles, assuring hauling capacity is not exceeded; assures that cargo is protected from weather and secured to prevent falling, shifting, and breakage.

- Maintains housing facilities, warehouse, workshop, and grounds, including inspections and repairs of heating systems.
- Performs plumbing work and repairs underground water and sewer pipes.
- Operates and maintains water systems at field camps including regular water quality testing for compliance with state standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to perform strenuous work in a forest environment and indoors, involving moderate to heavy physical effort.
- Skill in the operation of vehicles up to 17,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight.
- Ability to plan and carry out work under limited direct supervision, and in accordance with work orders, oral instructions, equipment manuals, and basic blueprints.
- Ability to troubleshoot with schematics, sketches, and drawings.
- Knowledge of routine maintenance tasks and necessary examination and operational tests.
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY
Physical EffortThe incumbent engages in strenuous work in a forest environment and indoors. The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolds, and on platforms in cramped and hard to reach places, and stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in awkward, tiring, and uncomfortable positions. Moderate to heavy physical effort is involved, moving, and carrying items up to 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo, handling heavy equipment, parts, tools, and materials, pushing wheelbarrows, and running power mowers. Considerable arm movement is required in painting, plumbing and equipment operating work.Working ConditionsThe incumbent works both in the office and outdoors. Exposure to cold, rainy, and snowy weather is common. Works inside and outside exposed to all weather conditions. Incumbent is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, oils, and noisy conditions. The work area is frequently inadequately heated and cooled. Incumbent may be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including evenings, holidays, and weekends. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions and its use is mandatory. Protective clothing and gear include gloves, goggles, respirator, rain gear, and hearing protection devices.

Skill and Knowledge Gained Interns will gain working knowledge of routine maintenance tasks. Knowledge of the assembly, installation, modification, and repair of structures, fixtures and equipment located within the recreation areas, and the ability to perform the necessary examination and operational tests where applicable. Skills necessary for maintaining tools, equipment, water systems and sewer systems. Skill in the operation of vehicles up to 17,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight. Ability to plan and carry out work under limited direct supervision, and in accordance with work orders, oral instructions, equipment manuals, basic blueprints and wiring diagrams, specifications and the normal practices and procedures. Ability to troubleshoot.
