The Plumbing Intern position is a structured training opportunity designed for transitioning service members participating in the DoD SkillBridge Program. This internship provides hands-on experience in residential and commercial plumbing systems while developing the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary for entry-level employment within the plumbing trade.During the 24-week training period, interns will work under the supervision of plumbers and experienced plumbing technicians to observe, assist with, and learn the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing systems. Interns will gain exposure to daily plumbing operations, job site procedures, and industry standards while developing professional workplace habits and technical competency.The program emphasizes safety, skill development, and practical field experience to prepare participants for successful transition into civilian careers within the skilled trades industry.Key Responsibilities:• Assist plumbers with the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems in residential and commercial environments.• Observe and participate in diagnosing plumbing issues such as leaks, pipe damage, blockages, and fixture malfunctions.• Support installation of pipes, fittings, fixtures, water heaters, valves, and drainage systems.• Assist in measuring, cutting, and assembling piping materials including PVC, PEX, copper, and steel.• Learn to interpret basic plumbing diagrams, blueprints, and construction plans under supervision.• Safely operate plumbing tools and equipment including pipe cutters, threading machines, drain cleaning equipment, and inspection tools.• Participate in preventative maintenance, system inspections, and basic troubleshooting tasks.• Follow OSHA safety standards and company safety procedures at all times.• Assist with job site preparation, material organization, and maintaining clean work areas.Learning Objectives:• Develop a foundational understanding of residential and commercial plumbing systems.• Gain practical experience installing and maintaining plumbing infrastructure.• Learn industry safety standards, building codes, and best practices within the plumbing trade.• Develop proper tool usage, installation techniques, and troubleshooting skills.• Strengthen professional workplace habits including communication, teamwork, reliability, and problem solving.Minimum Qualifications:• Active-duty service member approved to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Program.• Interest in pursuing a career in the plumbing industry or skilled trades.• Ability to follow instructions and work effectively within a team environment.• Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn hands-on technical skills.• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in various environments including indoor, outdoor, and construction job sites.Work Environment:This internship provides hands-on training at residential and commercial job sites under the direct supervision of experienced plumbing professionals. Work may involve physical activity, use of hand and power tools, and exposure to typical construction environments including varying weather conditions.
Participants should possess a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and the ability to perform physical work in residential and commercial environments. A valid driver’s license is preferred. No prior plumbing experience required.
