The "Introduction to Film and Media Production" is an intensive 8-week certificate program specifically designed for transitioning soldiers, veterans, and their families, leveraging their unique discipline and teamwork skills for success in the media industry. This extended break is strategically allocated for four major homework projects, giving students ample time to develop critical storytelling and editing skills by creating their own content with personal equipment, solidifying the technical and creative concepts learned in class.The course balances creative theory with practical application, covering everything from visual storytelling, script breakdown, and talent management to the technical operation of professional cameras, lighting, and audio equipment. Students will progress through foundational skills to advanced techniques in cinematography, sound design, and post-production, culminating in two major team-based projects: a 60-second commercial and a 6-8 minute short film. Upon completion, graduates are prepared for immediate entry-level employment as versatile crew members, with specialized skills qualifying them for roles such as Production Assistant, Camera Assistant, or Grip/Electric Technician on professional film sets, providing a direct pathway to a successful career in the film and media production field.

Their job description would include:Core Responsibilities:● Performing general set support duties like locking down locations, distributing paperwork, and managing equipment.● Assisting specific departments based on production needs, thanks to their cross-functional training.Specialized Skills (Their Advantage):● Camera Department: Assisting with camera builds, lens changes, media management, and slating scenes.● Grip & Electric: Setting up and striking lighting, running cables, and managing grip equipment like dollies and jibs.● Audio Department: Operating boom microphones, placing lavalier mics, and assisting with sound recording.● Post-Production: Assisting with data wrangling, basic editing, and organizing footage for the editing team.In short, they are a highly capable entry-level Crew Member who can contribute meaningfully across multiple departments on a film set, making them more valuable than a general Production Assistant and providing a clear pathway to specialize as a Camera Operator, Grip, Sound Mixer, or eventually a Director of Photography.
