This is skilled fire suppression and emergency response work involving responding to citizen calls for emergency assistance due to fires and other crisis situations; operates fire suppression equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of higher-ranking officer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK (May not include all of the duties performed.)Responds to emergency situations involving the destruction of property and potential loss of life such as fires, auto accidents, hazardous materials incidents, emergency medical and rescue incidents, natural disasters.Operates a ladder truck, pumper or emergency response vehicle; inspects, tests, performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.Carries, raises and climbs ladders, lays out and connects hoses; directs fire suppressants to extinguish fires.Extricates victims from hazardous and life threatening situations; performs emergency medical treatment as needed.Cleans and maintains apparatus, tools, equipment, and the station.Continues to train with fire tools and equipment to develop and maintain proficiency; receives training regarding new developments in hazards, equipment and techniques; maintains adequate physical condition.Maintains records related to the work.Conducts first aid and CPR classes; makes school presentations on fire prevention; conducts tours of station. Is involved in conducing and designing pre-plans where necessary.Performs duties required for firefighting and rescue involving aircraft.Performs other related duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS OF WORKConsiderable knowledge of fire suppression and first responder methods, practices and techniques.Considerable knowledge of fire response equipment operation and maintenance.Knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment and to fire suppression and first responder activities.Knowledge of city streets and locations.FIREFIGHTER (continued)Knowledge of first aid and rescue procedures.Ability to operate fire apparatus and equipment.Ability to drive and operate all emergency and motor vehicles.Ability to operate hand tools used during suppression activities such as power saw, axes, ventilator fans, forcible entry tools, and others.Ability to perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, and tools.Ability to lift ladders, carry hoses, work in cramped spaces and situations requiring agility, strength and stamina for prolonged period under adverse conditions.Ability to meet physical requirements as established.Ability to communicate over the radio and telephone and express ideas clearly during suppression activities.Ability to deal courteously and authoritatively with the public.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to advance charge hand lines horizontally and vertically, and effectively operate the nozzle. Ability to deploy and climb ground ladders.Ability to operate portable fire extinguisher.Ability to perform salvage and overhaul operations.Ability to enter data into the computer.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other public safety agencies and the general public.DESIRED MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCECompletion of high school and successful completion of training prescribed by the Minot Fire Department; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSMust obtain national certification as a Registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) within the probationary period. See Fire Department Administrative Policy SOG #47 EMT Program.Possession of a valid North Dakota driver's license.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 130 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
