The Firefighter Basic certificate program prepares students to meet the State of Florida standards for Firefighter I/II. The course provides fundamental information on fire department operations. Students are trained in the performance of the duties of a firefighter during both emergency and non-emergency operations. This training includes hazardous materials, vehicle extrication, wildland, ropes, ladders, and extinguishing fires. Upon successful completion of the NWF State College Fire Academy, students who meet all graduation requirements are eligible to test for the state exam which consists of a written and practical test.
A Florida career firefighter protects life, property, and the environment by responding to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and natural disasters. They operate fire apparatus and equipment, provide emergency medical care, and perform fire prevention, inspection, and public education activities. Firefighters maintain readiness through ongoing training, physical fitness, and adherence to state and departmental standards.
