The four-week Orthotic Fitter SkillBridge training program is designed to prepare participants for entry-level orthopedic device fitting responsibilities through progressive, competency-based instruction. Training includes onboarding and compliance, product knowledge, patient intake and communication, fitting techniques, documentation standards, and supervised appointment participation. Participants advance from observation and guided practice to active participation under close supervision, culminating in a competency review and individualized development plan.
Participants will take part in a structured four-week training program designed to develop competency in orthopedic device fitting and clinic operations. They will shadow experienced orthotic fitters during patient appointments to learn workflow, fitting techniques, and patient education standards. They will assist with preparing for patient appointments, including gathering devices, setting up fitting areas, and organizing required paperwork. Participants will support the patient intake process by confirming basic patient information, reviewing referral details, and gathering relevant medical history information under supervision. Additionally, they will observe and assist with measurement, sizing, fitting, and adjustment of common orthotic devices, gradually increasing hands-on participation as competency is demonstrated. Participants will gain the ability to provide standardized patient education on proper device use, wear schedule, care instructions, and basic troubleshooting with oversight from a lead fitter. They will also learn to complete and review required fitting documentation accurately and submit paperwork in accordance with internal procedures and HIPAA compliance requirements. They will learn to identify issues that require escalation (e.g., unclear referral documentation, patient discomfort, sizing concerns, unusual circumstances) and notify a supervising team lead promptly. Participants will take part in weekly check-ins with team leads to receive feedback, review progress toward competency benchmarks, and set goals for improvement.
Participants can expect to spend time at off-site locations in the greater Virginia Beach, VA area.
