This SkillBridge opportunity places transitioning service members inside the Office of the CISO, where you will gain hands-on experience protecting enterprise systems, sensitive data, and regulated environments.This is an active, operational cybersecurity role—not a policy-only position. Participants will work alongside experienced engineers in a fast-paced environment, contributing to real-world security operations, monitoring, and incident response. The Cybersecurity Engineer SkillBridge intern supports enterprise security operations across endpoint, network, cloud, and compliance domains. You will assist in deploying and maintaining security tools, monitoring alerts, responding to incidents, and strengthening the organization’s overall security posture.This opportunity is ideal for service members with IT, cyber, or communications backgrounds who want to transition into a civilian cybersecurity engineering or security operations role.
We are looking for individuals who:- Take ownership of their work and operate with a mission-focused mindset- Pay attention to detail and proactively identify risks- Are comfortable working in dynamic, fast-paced environments- Ask questions and continuously seek to improve their technical skills- Understand that cybersecurity decisions have real-world operational impactsThe discipline, accountability, and situational awareness developed through service translate directly into success in this role.What You Will Gain- Hands-on experience in enterprise cybersecurity operations- Exposure to real-world compliance environments (CMMC, NIST, DFARS)- Mentorship from experienced cybersecurity professionals- Practical skills directly applicable to roles such as: Cybersecurity Engineer, Security Analyst, SOC Analyst, Information Security SpecialistKey Responsibilities- Deploy, configure, and maintain cybersecurity tools, including: Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR), Security Information & Event Management (SIEM), Vulnerability scanning platforms, Network monitoring solutions.- Monitor and triage security alerts, distinguishing real threats from false positives- Support incident response activities, including: Event scoping and containment, Evidence handling and documentation, Coordination under an established incident response plan.- Develop and tune detection rules/signatures in platforms such as Splunk or Microsoft Sentinel- Collaborate with IT and infrastructure teams to implement practical security controls and mitigations- Support identity and access management (IAM), including account provisioning and access reviews- Assist with vulnerability scanning and remediation tracking- Contribute to compliance efforts aligned with: NIST SP 800-171, CMMC, DFARS / ITAR requirements.- Evaluate and monitor enterprise AI tools, ensuring secure, policy-compliant usage- Identify and communicate emerging risks, including: AI-related threats (prompt injection, data leakage, misuse), Security gaps in systems or processes.- Assist with cybersecurity documentation, reporting, and leadership briefingsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs, firewalls, segmentation)- Familiarity with security tools such as SIEM, EDR, vulnerability scanners, or monitoring platforms- Basic understanding of: Alert triage and event correlation, Incident response processes, Cybersecurity operations environments.- Experience with Windows and/or Linux systems (including command line)- Understanding of identity and access management principles (MFA, least privilege, RBAC)- Ability to collaborate with technical teams to solve security challenges- Strong attention to detail and ability to operate with limited supervisionPreferred Qualifications- Background in cyber, IT, or communications fields (e.g., Navy IT/CWT, Army 17C/25B, Air Force 1D7/1B4, Marine Corps 06xx/17xx)- Familiarity with frameworks such as NIST 800-171 or CMMC- Exposure to detection engineering or SIEM platforms- Experience or interest in AI technologies and associated security risks- Industry certifications such as: CompTIA Security+, CySA+, Equivalent military training- Aviation, defense, or federal contracting experience (not required)- Ability to obtain and maintain access to systems handling controlled data (DFARS/ITAR)
Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent military training, certifications, or hands-on experience will be considered in place of a degree. Candidates who served in military occupational specialties involving signals intelligence, communications, network operations, cyber warfare, or information assurance are strongly encouraged to apply.Entry-level candidates are welcome.
