This SkillBridge opportunity provides transitioning service members with structured, hands-on training in heavy civil construction management within a real-world field environment. Participants will work directly with experienced Superintendents and Project Managers on active job sites, gaining practical experience in site development, underground utility installation (sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and watermain), earthwork operations, grading, and paving coordination.Participants will assist in daily field operations including crew coordination, safety enforcement in accordance with OSHA and MIOSHA standards, production tracking, and quality control. Training includes exposure to blueprint reading, construction plan interpretation, and the use of construction technology such as Trimble GPS systems, pipe lasers, and slope lasers for layout and grade control.This structured 120-day program is designed to develop future field leaders by combining technical construction knowledge with leadership development, communication, and problem-solving skills. Participants will gain experience working in a fast-paced, team-oriented construction environment while learning how to support project execution, coordinate with subcontractors, and contribute to overall jobsite performance.Upon completion, participants will be prepared to transition into civilian roles as Assistant Commercial Civil Superintendents or similar field leadership positions, with a defined career pathway into Superintendent and Project Management roles within the heavy civil construction industry.
The Assistant Commercial Civil Superintendent supports field operations on heavy civil construction projects, including site development, underground utility installation (sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and watermain), earthwork, grading, and paving coordination. This role assists in supervising crews, coordinating daily field activities, enforcing safety compliance in accordance with OSHA and MIOSHA standards, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.Participants will assist with daily jobsite operations, including crew coordination, production tracking, quality control, and communication with Superintendents, Project Managers, subcontractors, and field personnel. Responsibilities include observing and supporting excavation operations, utility installation, grading processes, and overall project sequencing while maintaining a strong focus on safety, organization, and accountability.Participants will receive structured, hands-on training in construction management, field supervision, and project coordination within a real-world operating environment. Training includes blueprint reading and interpretation, understanding civil plans and profiles, construction safety practices, and the use of construction technology such as Trimble GPS systems, pipe lasers, and slope lasers for layout and grade control. Additional training includes production tracking, documentation, and quality assurance processes used to manage project performance.This position is designed as a leadership development role focused on building future Superintendents. Participants will develop communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills necessary to support field leadership and contribute to successful project execution. The program provides a defined career pathway into Superintendent and Project Management positions within the heavy civil construction industry.
Active-duty service members eligible for the DOD SkillBridge Program. Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership, discipline, and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment. Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions and learn construction operations is required. Prior construction experience is a plus; However, training will be provided.
