The Trinity Health Phlebotomist / Laboratory Assistant SkillBridge Program is a 12-week structured professional development opportunity designed for transitioning Service Members seeking experience in laboratory and patient diagnostic support services within a healthcare environment.Participants will gain exposure to inpatient, outpatient, and flex laboratory operations through orientation, job shadowing, and supervised on-the-job training (OJT). The program focuses on building technical competency, patient interaction skills, specimen handling knowledge, and understanding of healthcare laboratory workflows while preparing participants for transition into civilian healthcare careers.Participants will function in a supernumerary training capacity and will not replace scheduled employees.
The Phlebotomist supports high-quality laboratory services by accurately collecting, labeling, and processing patient specimens in accordance with established safety and quality standards. This role contributes to timely and efficient laboratory workflows by coordinating lab order activation, verifying documentation, and preparing samples for in-house testing or courier transport. Working closely with laboratory and clinical team members, the Phlebotomist interacts directly with patients to provide compassionate, professional specimen collection while maintaining strict adherence to identification and infection-control procedures. Through strong attention to detail, effective communication, and collaboration across care teams, this role helps support reliable diagnostic outcomes and a patient-centered laboratory environment.The Lab Assistant supports essential operations within the clinical laboratory by performing phlebotomy, specimen processing, and a variety of rotating workflow tasks. This role ensures accurate collection, labeling, handling, and preparation of specimens to support high-quality diagnostic testing across the health system. Working within a collaborative laboratory environment, the Lab Assistant coordinates effectively with laboratory professionals and clinical staff to support timely turnaround of results. Responsibilities also include assisting with send-out coordination, inventory maintenance, and communication with care teams, while consistently upholding patient safety, confidentiality, and regulatory standards in all aspects of laboratory support.
