Position: Veteran Services Office (VSO) Program AssociateOverview of VSO Operations: The VSO helps veterans and their dependents access Federal veterans benefits that they are entitled to by managing the entire claims process and advocating for veterans with various government agencies. Key Point: VSO employees are County Employees. While we are trained by and have access to the VA Claims system, we represent the veteran and not the VA. Typical programs that veterans access through the VSO include service-connected disability, war time pension, dependency and indemnity compensation, pension/life insurance, college fee waiver, discharge upgrades, records requests, VA home loans, VA health care, veteran designation, etc. This is an excellent role for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, enjoys variety, and wants to make an impact in the local community.
Examples of Duties: - Assists with screening veterans to determine supportive services areas such as health care, substance abuse treatment, legal services, employment, and housing - Participate in veteran engagement events and community outreach in San Mateo County - Assist visitors and callers in helping determine the nature of the visit or the problem and explain detailed policies, procedures and regulations related to veterans’ services - Perform basic office support duties such as collating materials, preparing/distributing mail, completing forms, proofreading materials, typing correspondence reports, etc. - Input client information into various databases Training Outcomes: - Develop skills to establish and maintain partnerships with community and govt agencies - Learn employee engagement and team collaboration strategies - Achieve accuracy in maintaining records and databases, ensuring comprehensive service - Understanding of Federal, State, and local legislation - Learn the structure and operation of county government Qualifications/Ability to: - Develop rapport and maintain effective working relationships with community members, staff, and external contacts at all levels with diverse backgrounds - Work independently and exercise sound judgement - Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing - Organize, be analytical, problem-solve and possess project management skills - Readiness to learn and utilize computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and job specific applications/systems Note: As our organization adheres to Civil Service Commission guidelines, all positions require a competitive selection process.
