The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF), State Equipment Fleet (SEF), is offering a SkillBridge opportunity for transitioning service members interested in heavy equipment and diesel mechanics. Participants will receive hands-on training maintaining and repairing a wide range of equipment used in roadway and airport operations, including loaders, graders, dump trucks, and support vehicles.This program provides real-world experience alongside experienced mechanics, exposure to preventative maintenance programs, diagnostics, and repair procedures, and an introduction to state fleet operations in Alaska’s unique and challenging environments.This opportunity is designed to build job-ready skills and support transition into full-time employment in the transportation and infrastructure field.
Participants will train alongside experienced State Equipment Fleet (SEF) mechanics performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repair on heavy equipment and fleet vehicles used in roadway and airport operations.Duties include assisting with inspections, servicing engines and hydraulic systems, troubleshooting mechanical issues, performing minor and major repairs, and learning proper safety procedures and documentation practices.Participants will gain hands-on experience with equipment such as loaders, graders, dump trucks, and support vehicles, while developing skills applicable to entry-level and journey-level mechanic positions.
Participants must be eligible for the DoD SkillBridge program and have command approval. Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in heavy equipment or diesel mechanics preferred. Valid driver’s license required; ability to obtain a CDL is beneficial but not required for participation.
