This Program Management & IT Delivery Support SkillBridge Internship is a training-focused, non-employment internship designed for transitioning U.S. service members seeking exposure to civilian program management practices within a federal IT contracting environment. The internship provides supervised, educational exposure to how federal IT programs are planned, monitored, and supported across their lifecycle. The participant will learn how civilian program managers coordinate delivery activities, manage documentation, track risks, and support compliance requirements—without owning contracts, budgets, or client relationships. This internship does not replace or backfill a Program Manager role and does not involve independent authority, client-facing leadership, or financial responsibility. All activities are performed under direct supervision and are structured for learning and skill development only. The goal of this internship is to prepare participants for entry-level or junior civilian roles in program coordination, IT project support, or operations management following military separation.
Learning Objectives & Outcomes Participants will develop foundational civilian skills in: • Program management fundamentals within federal IT environments • Exposure to IT program lifecycle concepts (planning, execution, monitoring) • Understanding documentation, reporting, and compliance expectations • Introduction to risk tracking and issue management • Professional communication in regulated civilian workplaces • Familiarity with CMMI-SVC–aligned processes at a conceptual level Supervised Training Activities Under the guidance of experienced program management staff, the participant may: • Observe how federal IT programs are structured and managed • Assist with maintaining program documentation and schedules as learning exercises • Observe stakeholder communication processes and reporting workflows • Learn how risks, issues, and dependencies are tracked and discussed • Assist with preparing internal status summaries for training purposes • Observe quality assurance and compliance review processes • Receive instructional exposure to SDLC concepts and delivery frameworks The participant will not act as a Program Manager, serve as a primary point of contact, manage budgets, lead teams, approve deliverables, or engage directly with government clients. SkillBridge Eligibility & Qualifications Required: • Active-duty U.S. service member approved for participation in the DoD SkillBridge Program • Within 180 days of separation or retirement • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills • Interest in civilian program management, IT operations, or federal contracting Preferred (not required): • Background in IT, engineering, operations, or mission planning • Familiarity with structured processes or project coordination • Interest in pursuing future PMP certification or program management roles Program Structure • Duration: 90–180 days (based on command approval) • Location: Remote or hybrid (as approved) • Compensation: Paid by U.S. military only • Employment: No guarantee or obligation of post-internship employment • Clearance: Not required during internship (exposure only) Why This SkillBridge Internship Matters This internship provides transitioning service members with realistic, compliant exposure to how federal IT programs are supported in civilian organizations—bridging military operational experience with civilian program coordination skills.
