The Shipfitter Trades Assistant supports ship construction and repair activities under supervision by performing basic shipfitting functions, learning proper techniques, and adhering to Austal USA’s safety, quality, and productivity standards. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to learn the trade, work as part of a team, and grow within Austal USA.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain safe work practices and follow all safety policies and procedures.- Safely and effectively use craft-related tools and equipment, including (but not limited to): millers, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, come alongs, and chain falls.- Ensure quality of own work and adherence to correct construction procedures in compliance with Austal USA standards and project specifications.- Accurately follow verbal and written instructions.- Work collaboratively as part of a team, fulfilling assigned roles and responsibilities.- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe worksite by practicing proper housekeeping and material storage.- Conserve consumables and minimize material waste.- Complete assigned daily tasks, including required documentation and quality sign-offs.- Learn and apply new skills on the job through on-the-job training- Assist other trades and Austal USA employees as directed, including performing tasks outside primary craft as required.- Monitor work environment for compliance with safety, quality, environmental, and health standards; report deficiencies to supervisor.- Perform shipfitting functions under supervision such as fitting up structure, cutting, sniping, sanding, grinding, prepping, tacking, and fitting plates.- Conduct basic layout of plates, materials, and weldments using engineering sketches, drawings, and diagrams under supervision.- Execute basic fitting operations under supervision using standard shipfitting equipment for fabrication and ship repair duties.- Read and interpret prints and specifications with guidance.Qualifications & Skills- Ability to safely operate and maintain basic trade tools and equipment.- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.- Willingness and ability to learn on the job in a hands-on environment.- Ability to work in a team environment and follow instructions from supervisors and leads.- Basic knowledge of shipfitting or fabrication preferred but not required (training provided).- Must comply with Austal USA’s Equal Opportunity and Anti-Harassment Policy and Employee Handbook standards.Work Environment & Physical Requirements- Must be able to work in a shipyard environment (indoor/outdoor, confined spaces, heights, and noisy conditions).- Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy materials and equipment as required.- Ability to stand, bend, stoop, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods.
