Key Responsibilities: Design Meet with clients to discuss project goals, preferences, and budget. Create landscape designs, sketches, and layouts that incorporate plants, hardscapes, and outdoor features. Provide material lists, estimates, and project timelines. Modify designs based on customer feedback and site conditions. Ensure all designs align with industry best practices and site requirements. Installation Perform installation of plants, trees, mulch, sod, hardscape elements, and other landscape materials. Operate power equipment and hand tools safely and effectively (e.g., skid steer, trenchers, augers). Ensure proper grading, drainage, and soil preparation. Load, transport, and unload materials and equipment as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site. Project Execution & Customer Service Communicate professionally with clients throughout the job. Oversee or assist with crew tasks to ensure work is completed to design specs and quality standards. Troubleshoot on-site issues and adjust plans as needed. Complete projects within established timelines and budgets. Qualifications: Experience in landscape design and installation (1–3+ years preferred). Ability to read and create landscape plans, sketches, or digital designs. Strong knowledge of plants, materials, and landscape construction practices. Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions. Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship. Preferred Skills (Not Required): Experience with design software (e.g., SketchUp, AutoCAD, Dynascape, ProLandscape). Experience leading a crew or supervising projects. Instructional Modules & Learning Objectives 1. Orientation, Safety, and Industry Overview Learning Objective: Understand program expectations, safety protocols, PPE usage, communication standards, and gain a basic overview of the landscape industry. 2. Tool Identification, Usage, and Maintenance Learning Objective: Properly identify, safely use, and maintain common hand tools, power tools, and small equipment used in landscaping. 3. Small Equipment Operation & Jobsite Safety Learning Objective: Safely operate basic landscape machinery (mowers, trimmers, blowers, mini skid steers, compactors) and follow jobsite safety practices. 4. Site Preparation, Grading & Reading Layouts Learning Objective: Perform site measurements, understand grading and drainage, read simple site plans, and prepare areas for installation. 5. Planting Techniques & Soil Preparation Learning Objective: Identify plant materials, prepare soil, and perform correct planting techniques for shrubs, trees, and other plant types. 6. Mulching, Bed Construction & Sod Installation Learning Objective: Correctly install mulch, shape/edge planting beds, cut/lay sod, and understand watering and aftercare practices. 7. Hardscape Base Preparation, Leveling & Borders Learning Objective: Excavate and compact base layers, level surfaces, and install borders/edging for hardscape projects. 8. Paver Installation & Small Hardscape Features Learning Objective: Lay pavers accurately, understand patterning, cut pieces as needed, apply joint sand, and install small hardscape features. 9. Irrigation Basics & Water Management Learning Objective: Understand irrigation system components, troubleshoot simple issues, and implement proper watering practices. 10. Design Principles, Site Analysis & Sketching Learning Objective: Apply basic landscape design principles, perform site analysis, and produce simple sketches or design layouts. 11. Material Calculations, Estimating & Job Planning Learning Objective: Calculate quantities for mulch, soil, sod, and pavers; estimate labor; and assist with planning job workflow and materials. 12. Client Interaction, Expectations & Professionalism Learning Objective: Build communication skills for interacting with customers, managing expectations, addressing concerns, and maintaining professionalism. 13. Leadership Basics, Delegation & On-Site Coordination Learning Objective: Assist in leading small crews, delegate tasks, coordinate workflow, and ensure quality standards are met. 14. Full-Scope Landscape Installation & Field Integration Learning Objective: Perform full-scope landscape installation tasks with minimal supervision, applying all softscape and hardscape skills. 15. Capstone Planning, Design & Execution Preparation Learning Objective: Plan and organize a capstone project, prepare materials, create timelines, and review expectations for final evaluation. 16. Final Field Assessment & Transition to Civilian Employment Learning Objective: Execute a complete capstone project demonstrating program mastery, participate in evaluations, and receive transition/employment guidance.
