Role at PennoniThis SkillBridge role directly supports field surveying and geospatial services that are critical to Pennoni’s civil, transportation, and site development projects. Participants contribute to:Topographic and boundary surveys for site planning, grading, and earthwork.Construction layout and stakeout for roads, utilities, and building foundations.Field data collection using GPS/RTK and total station equipment, providing accurate inputs for engineering design and project documentation.Supporting civil engineering design and inspection teams with verified field measurements.JOB DESCRIPTIONThis DoD SkillBridge training program provides active-duty service members with structured, hands-on experience in land surveying and field data collection. Participants will work alongside experienced survey crews supporting topographic, boundary, utility, and construction layout surveys for civil infrastructure and site development projects throughout Hampton Roads. Training includes daily use of GPS/RTK units, robotic total stations, and data collectors; downloading and organizing field data; basic exposure to CAD drafting workflows; and learning the full field-to-finish surveying process.This is a training-only position. Participants continue receiving full pay and benefits from the DoD; no compensation is provided by the company. The ideal candidate has mechanical aptitude, enjoys outdoor work, and is interested in geospatial, engineering, or construction-related fields. All equipment and PPE are provided. Goal is for successful participants to be considered for full-time employment after separation, based on performance and business needs. Training is customized to individual. Overview of Training - • Weeks 1–2: Orientation, Safety, and Surveying Basics• Weeks 3–5: GNSS Equipment Operation and Field Data Collection• Weeks 6–8: Robotic Total Station Operation and Traversing• Weeks 9–10: Construction Stakeout Methods and Site Layout• Weeks 11–12: 3D Laser Scanning (HDLS) and Point Cloud Basics• Weeks 13–15: CAD Drafting with AutoCAD Civil 3D – Intro and Linework• Weeks 16–17: Civil 3D Surfaces, Annotation, and Sheet Production• Weeks 18–19: Boundary, ALTA, and Topographic Survey Types• Week 20: Legal Principles, Deed Research, and Plats• Week 21: Quality Control Processes and Final Deliverables• Weeks 22–24: Capstone Survey Project, Reporting, and Final Evaluation
