Continue Your Leadership Legacy — Mentor the Next Generation of Officers (Up to 6 Positions)The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation, invites Commissioned Officers and senior Non-Commissioned Officers (E-7 and above strongly encouraged) to apply for an elite SkillBridge opportunity embedded within the Academy’s Regimental Life program.This is not an internship. This is a leadership extension mission.USMMA is seeking up to six (6) transitioning service members to serve as Regimental Support Leaders, each assigned to one of the Academy’s six midshipmen companies (approximately 150 midshipmen per company). Participants will work directly alongside Tactical Officers to mentor, train, and shape future merchant marine and military officers.About the Mission: Located in Kings Point (near New York City), NY, USMMA develops leaders of exemplary character dedicated to serving the economic and national security interests of the United States.As a SkillBridge participant, you will:• Operate in a structured, military-collegiate environment• Mentor and develop officer candidates• Apply your operational leadership experience in a higher-education setting• Gain exposure to federal civilian leadership, student development, and regimental operationsThis role is ideally suited for seasoned leaders who:• Have led troops at the platoon, company, or battalion level• Excel in mentorship and professional development• Thrive in disciplined environments• Want to continue influencing the next generation of uniformed leadersThis SkillBridge experience provides structured exposure to:• Higher education leadership environments• Student development and counseling practices• Federal workforce culture• Policy implementation in a hybrid military-academic setting• Strategic leadership in an institutional command environmentParticipants receive:• USMMA Orientation• Regimental policy training• Safety and emergency management instruction• Mid-term and final performance evaluations• Completion documentation
Under the supervision of a Tactical Officer (GS-12) and the Commandant of Midshipmen’s Office, you will:• Assist in administering regimental training, discipline, and leadership programs• Mentor midshipmen in military customs, professional conduct, and leadership• Monitor academic and disciplinary performance in coordination with faculty• Support training development and execution• Assist in maintaining barracks standards, safety, and readiness• Facilitate drill, honor code processes, intramurals, and leadership selection boards• Serve as a visible, daily role model for future officers
Ideal Candidate Profile• Senior NCO (E-7 and above preferred; strong E-6s considered). Commissioned officers with relevant leadership experience will also be considered.• Demonstrated leadership and mentorship experience• Strong written and verbal communication skills• Ability to adapt to a higher-education environment• Professional presence and commitment to developing young leaders
