C270 Electrical/Electronics Engineer Internship
The Code 270 (C270) Electrical/Electronics Engineering and Planning Division at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) provides technical direction on electrical systems for all non-nuclear work in connection with overhaul, modernization, repair, conversion, and inactivation of ships, submarines, Moored Training Ships, and land-based prototypes; technical guidance and assistance in the development and implementation of shipyard training programs as required to support accomplishment of cognizant non-nuclear work on electrical systems; ensuring proper liaison with the Production Resources Department (Code 900) and Operations Department (Code 300); and additional duties assigned by NNSY’s Chief Engineer. The purpose of this 13-week plan is to provide active-duty military participating in the SkillBridge program the necessary on the job training and the opportunity to compete for a full-time job within the division. This opportunity for a full-time job will be based on their combined military and previous work experience relating to non-propulsion and propulsion plant electrical and electronic equipment as well as exceptional performance reviews during the time of internship.
ABOUT THE JOB
Job Title: Electrical Engineer, GS-05 through GS-11Job Description: The primary function of this position is to provide C270 Division waterfront and planning yard products for overhaul, repair, conversion, construction, inactivation, and recycling of ships. These products include but are not limited to the development and review of Task Group Instructions (TGIs), Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs), Selected Record Documents (SRDs), technical manuals, process instructions, correspondences (letters and memos), test specifications, system drawings, etc. Other primary functions may include ordering performing ship checks, selecting and ordering material, performing calculations, and data analysis. An appropriate bachelor’s degree is required to be selected as an engineer. The minimum starting pay grade/salary will be GS-0850-05 Step 10 ($55,118 in 2025), however the applicant may qualify for a higher grade and salary per OPM standards based on their experience and/or educational achievement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide technical direction on electrical systems for all non-nuclear work in connection with overhaul, modernization, repair, conversion, and inactivation of ships, submarines, and more.
- Assist in the development and implementation of shipyard training programs.
- Ensure proper liaison with Production Resources Department and Operations Department.
- Develop and review Task Group Instructions, Ship Installation Drawings, Selected Record Documents, technical manuals, process instructions, correspondences, test specifications, and system drawings.
- Perform ship checks, select and order material, perform calculations, and data analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Ability to gain a Security Clearance
- Pass a background check
- Potential to pass a drug screening
- Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field
- Experience and/or educational achievement in non-propulsion and propulsion plant electrical and electronic equipment

You must be a US Citizen, be able to gain a Security Clearance, pass a background check, and potentially pass a drug screening. This position is on location at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.
