This internship provides transitioning military members with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience necessary to become proficient Survey Aides by providing comprehensive instruction in field surveying, utility mapping, GIS data management, and infrastructure verification, all within a supportive professional environment. Through progressive weekly training, participants will develop technical competency, operational independence, and contribute to real-world projects in the Virginia Beach Public Works department.
Perform a variety of tasks in support of an engineering survey party involved in system record keeping, field verification and basic survey work. Representative Work Functions and Responsibilities• Assist in land surveying by holding grade rod, giving sights on fixed points using plumbob, front or rear chaining to determine elevation, property lines and distances. • Perform manual tasks such as digging, cutting brush, or driving hubs and guard stakes to locate or mark property boundaries. • Double check calculations to ensure accurate field notes. • Operate electronic locating devices to mark existing utility lines or locate underground property pins. • Work in street or City right-of-way on a regular basis to gather field information. • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.
