An Information Systems Security Analyst (ISSA) helps protect an organization’s computer systems, networks, and sensitive information from cyber threats. At the entry level, the ISSA supports senior security staff by monitoring systems, learning security tools, and assisting with basic security tasks. This role is ideal for individuals beginning their cybersecurity career who want hands‑on experience with real‑world security operations, risk management, and incident response.The ISSA contributes to maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of organizational data while developing the skills needed to grow into more advanced cybersecurity responsibilities.
The Information Systems Security Analyst supports the organization’s cybersecurity operations by monitoring systems for suspicious activity, documenting findings, and escalating incidents when needed. They help identify basic risks such as outdated software or weak passwords, maintain asset inventories, and assist with routine security tool operations including firewalls, endpoint protection, encryption, and intrusion detection systems. The ISSA follows predefined procedures during low‑severity incidents, gathers evidence for senior analysts, and contributes to incident documentation and review. They also support policy and procedure maintenance by updating security documentation, ensuring compliance, and organizing records for audits. Additionally, the ISSA promotes cybersecurity awareness by sharing best practices, identifying user‑related risks, and participating in training and phishing‑simulation activities.
