The six-month Skillbridge Fellowship Program at re:3D presents a unique opportunity for service members transitioning out of military life to gain work experience at a civilian tech startup. We are pioneers of human-scale 3D printing, partnering with a variety of customers and stakeholders to push the boundaries of additive manufacturing. We offer custom 3D printers, design services, contract printing, and training and support while pursuing new ways to empower a variety of communities and organizations to adapt and grow with the solutions we offer. This opportunity for an experienced polymer scientist focuses on helping us conduct research to support and develop our NSF-, DoD-, and NASA-funded investigations in 3D printing from reclaimed plastic at our headquarters in the dynamic and innovative setting of Austin, Texas.
The successful candidate for this Polymer Scientist position will be at the forefront of our development of new products, prototypes, and processes in 3D polymers for FGF and FDM applications. They will demonstrate best practices in research, development, implementation, and execution of new material synthesis, formulation, and process improvement; design experiments and statistical tools to assist in identification and resolution of root causes of variations in processes; manage projects in an effective manner; and ensure cross-functional technology assessments, products, and other processes are delivered on-time and of high quality. The Polymer Scientist will work closely with other team members as an integral partner in researching and implementing new and legacy products. They will collaborate with production on scale-up and transfer of new products to manufacturing; recommend effective solutions to resolve any identified issues on sustaining products; partner closely with product managers to generate specifications and set project scope; communicate with cross-functional teams across the company to drive product research and development; and provide mentoring and guidance to junior scientists and engineers by sharing scientific and technical knowledge. This is an ideal opportunity for a creative, responsible, self-motivated team player who can thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and contribute to our mission of building 3D printers to the highest manufacturing standards possible. The successful candidate will participate in the culture and values of our company, reinforcing the soft and social skills necessary for transitioning service members to succeed in the civilian work environment. Among other requirements, the Polymer Scientist will build strong team relationships; follow and uphold all company policies, procedures, and guidelines; train and supervise staff; and work closely with research and production staff and project managers to address problems, refine workflow, and improve product designs. Our goal for the candidate is to enable them to transition to civilian life in a positive, upbeat, collaborative setting and prepare them for future professional success. The successful candidate will have a Masters or Ph.D. degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry, or other related field. We prefer candidates who have a minimum three (3) years of industrial experience in research and development directly related to hands-on 3D printing material research and development, innovation, product development, and commercialization of new ideas. Other desirable qualifications include a strong understanding of polymer chemistry/physics and materials science, particularly relating to processing-structure-property relationships and mechanical testing methods; familiarity with the additive manufacturing market including technologies, materials, leading companies, and trends; excellent verbal and written communication skills; an ability to work well under pressure to produce consistent, high-quality work; and be detail-oriented, technically minded, self-motivated, and a team player. This position is an interim/onboarding position with potential for transition to permanent employment at the completion of the candidateship, contingent upon successful evaluation of performance and fit. Prospective pay to be determined based on experience and performance, within the range of $40-43 hourly or the salaried equivalent.
