The incumbent would work as a fisheries technician to support stream restoration and aquatic habitat projects across the Shoshone National Forest in coordination with the District Fish Biologist. The Shoshone National Forest has many miles of streams and alpine lakes with native fish, including Yellowstone cutthroat trout, and other game non-native species. This position involves electrofishing surveys, monitoring restoration effectiveness, implementing beaver dam analogs, assisting with stream restoration planning, and collecting beaver‑use data to inform potential beaver translocations. Fieldwork occurs in rugged mountain terrain, often in inclement weather, and requires hiking long distances, carrying heavy packs, and working in areas with abundant grizzly bears.
The Fisheries Technician will support aquatic habitat restoration and fisheries management projects throughout the Shoshone National Forest, working closely with biologists to collect field data, implement restoration structures, and assist with project planning. Primary duties include conducting electrofishing surveys in wadeable streams, monitoring restoration effectiveness through habitat assessments and fish sampling, installing beaver dam analogs and other low‑tech restoration structures, and collecting beaver‑use data to evaluate potential translocation sites. Opportunities also exist to gain experience in other resource areas including wildlife, hydrology, and archaeology. The position requires extensive fieldwork in rugged, remote mountain terrain, often during inclement weather, and involves hiking long distances, carrying heavy packs, and working in streams while wearing waders. The technician must be comfortable navigating steep slopes, working around swift water, and operating safely in areas with abundant wildlife, including grizzly bears. Strong data‑recording skills, teamwork, and a willingness to work in challenging outdoor conditions are essential.This position is an unpaid internship, the Forest Service will not be paying wages. Applicant will need to pay for their own housing, however some bunkhouse space is available at an affordable rate.
