We are committed to supporting transitioning service members through the DoW SkillBridge program by providing hands-on experience in project coordination and construction leadership, with exposure to real-world operations and the potential for future career opportunities.Position OverviewThe SkillBridge Carpenter is a training-focused, hands-on field role designed to prepare transitioning service members for civilian careers in the construction trades. Under the supervision of experienced Foremen and Working Superintendents, the SkillBridge participant will learn and apply core carpentry and general construction skills while supporting active commercial and renovation projects.This position emphasizes skill development, safety, craftsmanship, and productivity through real-world jobsite experience. Participants will gain exposure to a wide range of construction activities while translating military discipline, teamwork, and operational skills into a civilian construction environment.
Training ObjectivesBy the end of the SkillBridge program, the participant will be able to:Key Training Activities & Responsibilities• Demonstrate foundational carpentry and general construction skills in a commercial job site setting• Safely use common hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment• Understand jobsite workflows, sequencing, and coordination among trades• Apply OSHA-aligned safety practices and company quality standards• Read and interpret basic construction drawings and layout information• Translate military work ethic, teamwork, and accountability into civilian trade competenciesUnder supervision and mentorship, the SkillBridge participant will:• Assist with metal stud framing and drywall installation• Support installation of acoustic tile (ACT) ceilings• Participate in concrete, masonry, and sitework support activities• Perform interior and exterior carpentry and trim work• Assist with demolition and renovation tasks• Help with layout, measuring, and material handling• Support equipment operation and tool setup under supervision• Maintain productivity while learning proper construction techniques• Coordinate work activities with foremen and other trades on site• Identify and communicate material needs, site conditions, or discrepancies• Participate in daily job site setup and cleanup activities• Observe and apply company quality standards for finished workSafety & Quality TrainingDuring the program, participants will:• Learn and follow company safety policies and OSHA requirements• Participate in toolbox talks and jobsite safety meetings• Practice proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area• Develop attention to detail and pride in craftsmanshipSkills & Tools ExposureDuring the program, participants may gain experience with:• Hand tools and power tools used in commercial carpentry• Basic construction equipment and jobsite materials• Construction drawings and layout tools• Jobsite documentation and communication practicesMentorship & Supervision• SkillBridge participants will be supervised by experienced Mitchell Design Build Foremen and Superintendents in coordination with the SkillBridge Program Director – Livingston Associates.• Weekly check-ins to review progress, learning objectives, and skill development• Gradual increase in tasks and responsibilities based on performance and competencyIdeal Candidate • Transitioning service members with experience in hands-on, technical, or operational roles such as:o Army: Engineers, Construction, Utilities, Maintenance, or Combat Support MOSo Air Force: Civil Engineering, Structures, Maintenance, or Operations AFSCo Navy/USMC: Seabees, Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, or Construction-related rates/MOS• Comfortable performing physical work in indoor and outdoor environments• Strong work ethic, reliability, and team-oriented mindset• Willingness to learn new skills and take direction in a structured job site environment• Familiar with safety procedures, accountability, and chain of command• Interested in transitioning into a long-term civilian career in the construction tradesPhysical & Work Environment Expectations• Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 75 lbs• Ability to work at heights and in varying weather conditions• Active construction jobsites with hands-on trade workPost-SkillBridge Employment PathwayParticipants successfully completing the Carpenter SkillBridge program may be evaluated for full-time employment.• Anticipated Salary: $52,000 - $60,000 (based on performance and skills obtained)• Benefits: health care, 401K, paid time off, and discretionary profit sharing• Potential Career Paths: o Carpentero Lead Carpentero Foremano or specialized trade roles
