The Department of Defense SkillBridge program at FCI Marion is a transition opportunity for active-duty service members in their final months of service. Through SkillBridge, participants gain real-world civilian work experience by shadowing correctional officers and observing operations across all departments of the facility. This hands-on exposure gives service members practical insight into daily prison operations and various roles within a federal correctional institution, helping them explore potential career paths.
A Federal Correctional Officer is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and order of a federal prison facility. This includes supervising inmates, enforcing institutional rules and regulations, and ensuring the daily custody and care of incarcerated individuals. Officers monitor inmate activities and movements, conduct security checks and searches for contraband, and respond to incidents and emergencies as they arise. They also write reports on inmate behavior, document incidents, and escort inmates for medical appointments, court appearances, and other movements. Throughout their duties, correctional officers help to uphold the mission of the Federal Bureau of Prisons by ensuring a safe environment for staff, inmates, and the public.
