This is a developmental position re-engineered at less than the full performance level for recruitment and training purposes. The duties of the position are similar to those of the target grade WG-5729-05. Performs entry level work with assignments designed to provide the competencies, skills, and experience required to perform the more complex work at the full performance grade level. The work increases in difficulty, complexity, and responsibility as the incumbent gains experience and demonstrates a full comprehension of assigned work.
ABOUT THE JOB
DRILL RIG OPERATOR HELPER - Works in a helper capacity, performing assignments and completing training aimed in preparing and gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of a drill rig operator at journeyman level. Assists journeyman drill rig operator in the transporting, setting up, alignment and operation of drill rig by lifting, carrying, holding, assembly and disassembly of drilling tools, mud and water lines, and fastening supports and anchors. Loads and unloads equipment, moves or assists with movement of drill rigs over difficult terrain and in hazardous locations. Operates drill rig under the direct supervision of journeyman drill rig operator at intermittent intervals as part of on-the-job training. Assists journeyman driller in performance of routine maintenance on all equipment. Assists with repairs, greasing and lubrication of equipment under supervision of drilling foreman. Maintains small tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, saws, axes, picks, mattocks, shovels, and chain tongs in satisfactory condition. Obtains tools for operator and returns tools to storage kit at completion of operations. As directed by drilling foreman, sets water pumps in location and connects water line from pump to rig; cleans casings, drill rods, and sample spoons and places them in readiness for use; guides casing and rods while sample driving and removing operations are in progress. Removes soil samples and rock core from sampling devices as directed. Assists inspector in preservation of rock and soil samples. Keeps work areas clear and assists with restoration of drill sites after completion of the work as directed by the drill rig operator.
