This program is designated as an “On-the-Job” training type program as outlined by the SkillBridge Program managers. Selected trainee’s will be considered “SkillBridge Interns” or “Police Recruit Interns.” Candidates will be employees of the Recruiting Unit, but will then be assigned to units throughout the department with specific job skills to master within the unit’s area of specialization. Each SkillBridge on-the-job training intern will be assigned to a mentor (or trainer) within the that unit to ensure success. All job skills will relate to San Jose Police Academy and California Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) learning domains.
Position Duties: The San Jose Police Department is seeking a self-motivated United States Military service-member to perform one or more of the following project-oriented assignments (NOTE: all service members are primarily assigned to the recruiting and the academy and will not shadow any of the below assignments during field work):Bureau of Investigations – Assaults Unit Assignment• Intern will be assigned a project that will focus on the relationship with the community by contacting victims of cases which have been closed for a variety of reasons• Interns will shadow police officers and contact community members that police officers have identified during community policing foot patrols• Intern will be required to present what they learnedBureau of Investigations – Sexual Assaults Unit Assignment• Intern will be assigned to a project that will focus on building community awareness of Megan’s law registrants through a revamping and consolidation of a sex offender registry• Intern will shadow detectives in different case follow-up tasksBureau of Investigations – Crime Scene Unit Assignment• Intern will shadow detectives and crime analysts in non-hazardous duties• Intern will prepare a training for other interns on the main considerations for a crime sceneBureau of Investigations – Financial Crimes Unit Assignment• Intern will shadow a detective and be assigned to gather and present data for financial elder abuse casesBureau of Administration – Police Range Assignment• Intern will shadow range officers in preparing for police training events and tests• Intern will complete a project that focuses on how range training impacts the department and the community
Due to the sensitive nature of the police career, only those candidates whose are the best match the position will be selected after a panel interview and a background investigation (the polygraph portion of the background will be waived until the SkillBridge candidate is selected by SJPD and will be conducted within the first three weeks of their assignment) . Service members will have demonstrated a high level of integrity and character during their time in the military. Even if a candidate has never been charged with a crime under state law or under Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), that does not preclude a candidate from being disqualified based on the San Jose Police Department Backgrounds unit discovering that a crime was committed.

Application for Police Recruit and Selection Process:The purpose of this SkillBridge opportunity is to ultimately get hired as a San Jose Police Recruit. Because of this, all SkillBridge applicants for the San Jose Police Department SkillBridge will apply for the Police Recruit Opportunity just like any other candidate. Selection will require a short interview with San Jose Police Department Recruiting unit and approximately 2 months in backgrounds. While other candidates for the San Jose Police Recruit opportunity will be required to test on their own time, testing for SkillBridge service-members will be waived until their SkillBridge assignment, during which they will be able to favorably complete a written test, a physical agility test, and an oral board panel interview test for the Police Recruit vacancy as part of their on-the-job training. Candidates who are selected and who successfully complete the San Jose Police Department SkillBridge program will be given preference for hiring.
