The Basic Machinist SkillBridge Program at Columbus Technical College’s COL Ralph Puckett Workforce Development Center provides transitioning service members with hands-on training in precision machining and advanced manufacturing. Participants receive instruction in the operation of manual and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools used in modern manufacturing environments. The program focuses on machining fundamentals, blueprint reading, measurement tools, shop safety, and machining processes used across aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing industries. Training is conducted through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on lab experience using industry-standard equipment. The program prepares participants for entry-level positions such as CNC machinist, machine operator, manufacturing technician, or production specialist. Participants who successfully complete the program will be connected with regional employer partners seeking skilled manufacturing talent.
Participants will train for entry-level positions in precision manufacturing and machining environments. Skills developed during the program include:• Operation of manual lathes and milling machines• Introduction to CNC machining and programming fundamentals• Precision measurement using micrometers, calipers, and gauges• Blueprint and technical drawing interpretation• Material cutting, drilling, turning, and finishing processes• Shop safety and quality control practices• Basic machine setup and tooling• Manufacturing workflow and production processesParticipants will gain practical experience operating equipment used in modern machine shops and production environments.
