The Intern Zookeeper Program at Chase Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservancy offers individuals a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the care, enrichment, and conservation of exotic and native wildlife. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks, including animal husbandry, habitat maintenance, educational outreach, and assisting with sanctuary operations. This immersive experience is designed to deepen participants' understanding of animal behavior, welfare, and conservation efforts while contributing meaningfully to the Sanctuary’s mission.The Intern agrees to fulfill the following duties:Provide daily care for the animals, including feeding, cleaning, and enrichment activities.- Assist in habitat maintenance and improvements.Follow all sanctuary guidelines and safety protocols.Participate in educational programs and guest interactions as needed.Complete all assigned tasks in a timely and professional manner.

ABOUT THE JOB

A Zookeeper is responsible for the daily care, feeding, and enrichment of animals while ensuring their health and well-being through observation and behavioral monitoring. This role involves educating the public through presentations, tours, and demonstrations, as well as training and supervising volunteers, interns, and new staff. Zookeepers are expected to maintain and clean animal habitats, document behavioral activities in ZIMS, and assist in operant conditioning for husbandry and medical procedures. They collaborate with colleagues, conduct independent research, and contribute to conservation efforts by attending seminars and sharing knowledge. Additionally, they must be capable of handling emergency situations, performing animal captures and restraint when necessary, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. Strong observational skills, self-motivation, and teamwork are essential for success in this role.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4 year degree/degree seeking in Zoology, Animal Sciences or related field
  • 40 hour work week
  • Commitment of at least 2 months
