ABOUT THE JOB

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. We have three SkillBridge opportunities at Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge in Tok, Alaska. Tok is on the highway system, ~200 miles from Fairbanks and ~250 miles from Anchorage. Job Titles: 1) Maintenance helper/worker, 2) Biological technician, 3) Park ranger1) Maintenance helper/worker-Assist maintenance staff with wide variety of tasks, including:• Facilities maintenance (carpentry, electrical, HVAC, grounds maintenance)• Automotive maintenance (highway vehicles, large equipment, UTV/ATV/Snow machine)• Road maintenance• Remote cabin construction and repair (requires transport via small aircraft or snow machine 2) Biological technician-Assist biologist with:• Wildlife surveys (by aircraft and ground)• Duck banding• Data entry3) Park Ranger-Assist visitor services manager with:• Interpretation and education at our two visitor centers, two campgrounds and recreation area• Light visitor services maintenance and upkeep of sites.Housing: Free furnished housing is available. Options include a bunkhouse as well as 6 dry cabins with access to kitchen, shower, laundry, etc. Vehicle: SkillBridge staff will be provided a government vehicle for work and approved personal use (groceries, local access, etc.).Amenities: There is a (1/2 mile) walking/biking trail around the HQ with several other longer trails near Tok. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist maintenance staff with tasks including facilities maintenance, automotive maintenance, road maintenance, and remote cabin construction and repair.
  • Assist biologist with wildlife surveys, duck banding, and data entry.
  • Assist visitor services manager with interpretation and education at visitor centers, campgrounds, and recreation area, including light visitor services maintenance and upkeep of sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Willingness and ability to undergo a background check.
  • Take and successfully complete U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided trainings such as Water Ditching, First aid/CPR, Shotgun training, Motorboat Operator Certification Course, Bear Awareness and Safety, and others.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Driver's license.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY

Willingness and ability to undergo a background check.Take and successfully complete U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided trainings that may include: Water Ditching, First aid/CPR, Shotgun training, Motorboat Operator Certification Course, Bear Awareness and Safety, and others. Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Driver's license.
