Information Technology Specialist
The Security IT Specialist plays a critical role in protecting TSA systems and sensitive information. They are responsible for implementing and managing tools that monitor, detect, and respond to security threats. This includes identity and access management, encryption technologies, and incident response planning. Security specialists ensure that all systems comply with DHS and federal cybersecurity standards.
ABOUT THE JOB
This SkillBridge experience prepares transitioning service members for a cybersecurity-focused career within federal systems. Participants will configure and evaluate security software, assist in rolling out IT security awareness training, and evaluate PKI and biometric authentication. They will help enforce compliance by reviewing security specifications for new systems and contributing to the planning of secure migrations. Interns will complete this program with an operational understanding of TSA’s layered defense strategy.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implementing and managing tools that monitor, detect, and respond to security threats.
- Configuring and evaluating security software.
- Assisting in rolling out IT security awareness training.
- Evaluating PKI and biometric authentication.
- Reviewing security specifications for new systems.
- Contributing to the planning of secure migrations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficiency in conduct of vulnerability assessments and/or penetration testing.
- Ability to analyze and prioritize vulnerabilities based on risk, potential impact, and exploitation criteria for risk management.
- Experience in operating and maintaining threat detection and response systems.
- Some level of experience with cybersecurity incident management and response.
- Aim to achieve a professional level certification, such as CompTIA Security+ or higher level certificates like CISSP.
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY
A successful candidate in Security IT Specialist should possess one or more of the following skills to identify, assess, and mitigate security vulnerabilities within an medium or large organizational IT infrastructure. Some proficiency in conduct of vulnerability assessments and/or penetration testing to identify security weaknesses; these may focus on network, operating system, or web application vulnerabilities. The ability to analyze and prioritize vulnerabilities based on risk, potential impact, and exploitation criteria for risk management. Experience in operating and maintaining threat detection and response systems and/or some level of experience with cybersecurity incident management and response. A successful candidate in Security IT Specialist should maintain or aim to achieve a professional level certification, such as CompTIA Security+ at a minimum. Higher level certificates are also available such as Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) as an industry standards. For specific focus, certifications such as GIAC Web Application Penetration Tester (GWAPT) are available.
